A guide to providing accessible information

Why produce accessible information?

Access to information and services impacts directly on the quality of everyday life of many disabled people, their families and carers.  Most of us take for granted the ability to go about our daily lives without experiencing barriers; the same may not always be the case for disabled people.

Accessible information and communication is important for several reasons. General good practice in terms of service delivery and inclusion strives to meet people’s individual needs. There are public relations benefits for any organisation, and providing alternative formats and communication methods has the potential to increase the number of disabled service users.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (UK) includes the provision of accessible information and communication as one of its main requirements of organisations providing goods and services.
